Review Monday: How to be A Normal Person by TJ Klune

Source: Goodreads

I’ve always been a person that those who know me will consider as being not totally normal. Which is good. I’m okay with not being like everyone else. I smile when people say jokingly, “You know you’re not normal right?”

That’s how much I love that term.

So it is to be expected that when I stumbled onto a book with the title How to be a Normal Person I was intrigued.

Then I read this synopsis:

Gustavo Tiberius is not normal. He knows this. Everyone in his small town of Abby, Oregon, knows this. He reads encyclopedias every night before bed. He has a pet ferret called Harry S. Truman. He owns a video rental store that no one goes to. His closest friends are a lady named Lottie with drag queen hair and a trio of elderly Vespa riders known as the We Three Queens.

Gus is not normal. And he’s fine with that. All he wants is to be left alone.

Until Casey, an asexual stoner hipster and the newest employee at Lottie’s Lattes, enters his life. For some reason, Casey thinks Gus is the greatest thing ever. And maybe Gus is starting to think the same thing about Casey, even if Casey is obsessive about Instagramming his food.

But Gus isn’t normal and Casey deserves someone who can be. Suddenly wanting to be that someone, Gus steps out of his comfort zone and plans to become the most normal person ever.

After all, what could possibly go wrong?

Life Interrupted. Thanks for reaching out Damaria

Okay. I’ve been a very naughty girl. Lol. Forgive me though. Life gave me a kick in the nuts and then proceeded to pummel me into the floor. But it was only to give me an idea of what it is I actually wanted from said life and how off-course I am at the moment.

Trying to put things into play to make sure that I’m on the right path now and I’m happy to be back. Somewhat back I mean. Don’t have anything for today. Not that I haven’t heard any album/song I wanted to review (I have) or a new audiobook/drama I wanted to share (there are a ton). Rather, it’s just been a long day and I’m not in the mood to do an extensive review at the moment.

I intend to take the weekend to regroup and then would be back, hopefully by Monday, posting my Monday review.

For those who are wondering, I finished Otaare. Or rather, I semi-finished it. Will still go back and re-write parts of it, but I have the bare bones of the story down.

Started another story, this one suited to the friends to lovers call and so far, the story’s flowing and I’m having fun with it. Will share a snippet of it some time soon.

A huge thank you 😀 to Damaria for reaching out to me. You’re right. Your mail made me feel so much better and was part of the reason why I came back to the blog. Thank you for making my day yesterday. And I’m really sorry that I’m just replying.

Until Monday… Here’s hoping we all have an amazing weekend.

Life Interrupted. Review Monday: Dragon Scales by Sasha L. Miller

26822456After work and my internet got in the way of me putting up this post yesterday as well, I figured I could start a new segment on the blog and call it Life Interrupted. So for the days like last Wednesday when I had no concept of time till Friday or yesterday’s madness, I can still put up the day’s post, just on the day I have the time to do so.

Either that or I should just have the posts pre-written like days before :). I’ll keep you guys posted on what I do end up deciding on.

But anyway, on to today’s review!

When I first got into M/M romance (and by that I mean the novels and not the fanfiction which started years before that with SasuNaru, the ultimate pairing. Lol) the first author I discovered was Megan Derr. The second author was Sasha L. Miller.

I got nominated for the Liebster Award

So the amazing Dana of Crimson Daylight nominated this blog for the Liebster Award \-/. I’m so happy right now, I’ve started doing the rumbling laugh that without fail has everyone around me ducking for cover-maybe because they say it makes me sound like a crazy person who’s just snapped–but who cares, I’ve been nominated for Liebster!

From what I gathered, here are the rules:

* Acknowledge the blog that nominated you and display the award.
* Answer 11 questions that the blog gives you.
* Give 11 random facts about yourself.
* Nominate 5-11 blogs you think are deserving of the award that have less than 200 followers.
* Let the blogs know you have nominated them.
* Give them 11 questions to answer.

So, here we go. First with the 11 answers to the questions I was asked:

  1. Your favorite supernatural creature?

Demon. And for this, I blame Kuroshitsuji and Megan Derr’s Dance with the Devil series. Demons do it for me these days. They’re strong. Sexy. And walk that divide. Plus, they take what they want and damn the consequences and you can find only a few supernatural beings who can go toe-to-toe with a demon and walk away.

2.     Your favorite characteristic about yourself?

That would be my vocal nature. I’m a very opinionated and I love to talk. Which means I tend to be that person who would talk your ear off about something I’m passionate about. It weans out those who don’t ‘get’ me and brings those who flow on the same wavelength as I together. Yup. I’ve made quite a few friends due to me talking long and loud about something I really love. Lol.

3.       Your least favorite characteristic about yourself?

I guess that would be my anxiety issue. When someone at first expresses displeasure about me or something I worked on, etc, it’s like the person attacked me and I sink into this funk. Of course that only lasts for a while until I bounce back and go back to something I love. But until then, it’s a depressive state for me.

4.      What’s the type of character (in books, films etc) that you absolutely cannot stand?

Definitely Mary Sues and Gary Stus. I’m a firm believer that no one is perfect. And no one can be that happy all the time. Let my characters have some flaws and I’m totally happy.

5.      Dogs or cats?

Definitely cats

6.    How would you choose to spend a lazy day.

With yoga, good food, a great book, a couple of hours listening to an audiobook, then maybe a chapter of a recent manga release and a couple of episodes of a Kdrama I’m presently following.

7.    The last thing you watched on TV?

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

8.    Your favorite Harry Potter character?

Sirius Black. He was an amazing godfather and he looked after Harry, long after Harry’s parents were dead and Sirius was in Azkaban. That is amazing godfathering skills :).

9.    How would you kill your arch enemy?

Flay them alive. I will start from the skin on their toes and work my way upwards. (maniacal laughter)

10.   What’s your guilty pleasure?

11.  The most embarrassing thing you’ve done (that you’re willing to share)?

Well, this is not an embarrassing thing I’ve done, more like the most embarrassing thing I’ve said. I was eleven when I visited one of my closest friends from Primary school. She had done her laundry by hand and refused to turn her clothes inside out. When I and her mother saw the clothes, her mother asked her to turn her clothes inside out. My friend, Omotola asked why. And I said “Because if your clothes fall, you won’t have to rewash them. They’re already inside out so technically, they won’t get dirty.” To make matters worse, I actually believed that and her mother just smiled but didn’t correct me. When I knew why we turn our clothes inside out—it’s to speed up the drying process by the way and so your dark colored clothes won’t fade out quickly—, I wanted to die of embarrassment. It’s been more than almost two decades since then and I still cringe when I remember it. Lol.

11 facts about me.

  1. My middle name, Itenoria is one that even my fellow Nigerians have trouble pronouncing. As for the meaning, it actually tells a story. A lengthy story in that eight letter word. Lol.
  2. I just identified myself as a scientific pantheist. In a country that there are just two dominant religions, being a pantheist is a bit tricky.
  3. I can’t see without my glasses. Seriously, getting on the road without my glasses is me asking for an accident.
  4. I’m a naturalista. In other words, you might just see me with my fro if you catch me walking down the street.
  5. I wear a watch that doesn’t tell the time anymore as a fashion accessory.
  6. I have four piercings in my ears (two in each ear) and I wear a different earring in each hole. So four different earrings when I’m leaving my house.
  7. I’m addicted to the Sims game
  8. I’m bisexual.
  9. I’m a sapiosexual. Give me anyone with smarts and I’m a goner.
  10. My LGBTQA journey started with SasuNaru (that’s Sasuke and Naruto as a romantic pairing, if you didn’t know) fan fiction.
  11. I live in Lagos, Nigeria.

My nominated blogs are:

Friday Review: Kuroshitsuji by Yana Toboso

Kuroshitsuji_01Okay, quick confession:

I love, love anime! Goodness how I love anime. I adore the characters. I love the stories. I love the craziness. I love knowing that week after week, I have something to look forward to. And when Masashi Kishimoto or Tite Kubo decide to go on a two or three weeks hiatus, I practically hyperventilate because I can’t get my Naruto or Bleach fix.

I finished Naruto with a sigh. Even though I was not a big fan of how things dragged at the end, I kept coming back so I could finish it. I even read the ten chapter Naruto Gaiden: the seventh Hokage!

Now Bleach? That, I’m still following, if anything so I can see Ichigo use his *spoiler alert* Shinigami, Quincy, Human and Hollow combo power *spoiler ended*. I sincerely hope it’s some kickass transformation otherwise I have to ask Tite Kubo to give me the last seven years of my life back. Lol.

But today is not about those series that I’ve stuck to forever. Nope. Today’s review is about a manga that always does it right for me: Kuroshitsuji or in English, Black Butler :D. Oh yeah, Kuroshitsuji is the ish!

Make Good Art

It’s been a long while since I last made a post. About 6 to 7 months if memory serves me right. In those last couple of months, a lot of things have happened. I’ve dealt with the loss of my step-father, changed jobs, adjusted to a 16 hour commute, and my writing has sort of suffered as a result of that; and so has this blog.

I refuse to let that continue to happen. It’s not right that I should let go of the things that make me happy because I’m trying to live a more mature life. Mature living hasn’t gotten me very far, I will like to point out.

My blog title for today is Make Good Art. Why do I say so? It’s because they’re the words Neil Gaiman said at a commencement speech last year. His words were, we should make good art, no matter what happens, no matter the situation we’re in, no matter what people say about our work, we should always seek to make good art. And not just good art, but we should make our art, in our voice.

I remember his words today because I just got my first review and rating for Reprisal. It was a one star and the reviewer had quite a number of faults to pick out in the book. The words got to me, made me depressed. And the joy I’d felt at having a novel out today; the joy I’d felt at the inspiration I had for a new book vanished into thin air as I saw frozen in my chair, my heart beating fast, depression seeking to weigh me down further. Bad reviews can do that. Especially when it’s the first your book gets.

How will I deal with it? I shall do three things told me by three different people I look up to for different reasons. They all have one thing in common though. They’re  writers.

The first is Neil Gaiman’s words. I will make good art. I shall seek to write better stories. But they will be stories that are distinctively mine, with my voice. I really can’t start changing my writing style. I tried that and failed quite horribly at it.

The second is from my good friend: Remi Olutimayin. I will Let it go and write another book. A brilliant piece of advice especially considering that I just got another idea for a new book: something funny and light, which I can enjoy writing and I do pray it gets accepted for publication.

The third is from M/M legend: Aleksandr Voinov. It wasn’t an advice per say, but it was something that he said he does whenever things get to him.Breathe!!! I need to take a long long breath, and keep moving forward. The breath is to take in the criticism, let it out, pull myself forward and let my body and mind know that it’s time to continue moving onwards.

This words are easier said than done though. I will be the first to admit. But I believe strongly in baby steps and it is about time I start living that.

My first step would be to continue from where I left off on this blog. For those that read my posts occasionally, I’m sorry I’ve been off. I’m back now though. Time to get to work.

Hopefully, by tomorrow evening, I shall have some snippets to share of my new story. Let me know if you like it.

The Way To Your Heart Bloghop

I was so meant to have posted this yesterday. However, I spent the Easter Hols hanging out with friends (doing the crazy things we do when there is a holiday that lasts for days and no work in sight). Had a major hangover when I got home last night so I slept off like a log of wood until I woke up this morning. Feel much better now though :D.

Less Than Three Press is celebrating their fourth year and so it’s party time. Yay! Lol. In order to mark the event, they’ve put together this amazing hop featuring so many amazing people, including the founders of LT3 themselves who all have different stories to tell about that special thing that they love, and they are doing so while giving out pretty shinies and awesome gifts :). LT3 has become a family for me, and it brings me joy to be associated with everybody on the team. Here’s to many more years :D.

Now, on to the real post. I have a lot of things I love. Television, Books, Coffee, Animes, Mangas, Music. The list is endless. However, if I was told to choose my one true love from this list, it would be music.

I’m the girl you’ll see with headphones attached to her head, whether she is happy, sad, ecstatic or depressed. Music has this soothing attribute to it. It’s also been with me through thick and thin, just like a best friend. Many a relationship had been clarified because I heard a song that showed me what my heart was feeling. Many a break-up had been soothed because I had songs that helped me vent, and helped me heal.

Once I put on my headphones or earphones, time just melts away. I’m in my own zone, from which creativity is birthed and I discover more about myself. It’s an experience that I cannot really put into words.

Whether it’s a 2Pac or Eminem rap, a composition by Beethoven, the wise words of Don Williams, a lonely Lady Antebellum song, Rihanna singing about S&M, Bob Marley speaking the truths of the world, the gothic songs of Evanescence and Within Temptation, or Breaking Benjamin doing their thing, music is my love, my life, my friend, and brings me so much joy and comfort that will always be unforgettable and appreciated.

An electronic copy of Saved by a Demon

{To Win:}

Leave me a comment telling me who your favorite artist is and what song is your favorite. To be fair, I will go first. I have tons of favorite artists (one for every genre) and lots of favorite songs. Had Enough by Breaking Benjamin is my favorite when I’m wishing a bad case of Karma on someone. My Immortal by Evanescence always gives me the shivers. A Dangerous Mind by Within Temptation reminds me of those loves, with dark eyes and hint of danger, and yet one is still drawn to them. Eminem’s Ass Like That makes me laugh. Rihanna’s Skin is able to get me in the mood very quickly (if you know what I mean #wink), Kalafina’s Kagayaku Sora no Seijaku niwa always, always moves me to tears. Still have many more on the list, but I think it’s time for me to stop talking (I do that a lot), and give you guys the chance to share your songs and artists with us.

Do not forget to include a means of contact. I will be giving out the gifts on the 15th of April. Please reply to the winning email I send to you as soon as possible because after 24 hours, I will be handing over your gift to someone else.
